The New Generation of Secure IIoT Gateways: What You Should Know About It
As we already discussed in this blog, Edge Computing has been brought in as an approach to solve some of the main challenges of IIoT. Its main benefits are a higher reliability, low latency and better security when transferring data to and from multiple remote sites.
But Edge Computing is capable of much more than handling secure networking. As is the case of the recently released SecFlow-1v industrial IoT gateway, it can also be used to perform IIoT-specific, non-networking functions. Take, for example, the case of open PLC with Edge Computing in a typical utility field area network deployment. One can add PLC capabilities to the secure IIoT gateway and thus make the external RTUs redundant. This has a two-fold advantage: Less boxes and overall better cyber security, as no one can physically access the RTUs any longer since they are fully contained within the gateway.
In another situation, SCADA firewall functionality can be added: The secure IIoT gateway can now monitor SCADA traffic between PLCs, and log relevant activity. If necessary, it can also actively block traffic for intrusion prevention.
Such functions are hosted on the new SecFlow-1v, but there is more to it: It also provides a user-friendly, open developer environment for adding new Edge Computing software such as automation control and other software-based functionalities – a neat solution that represents out-of-the-gateway thinking!
